Support Shae and Family on his Road to Recovery
Donation protected
My brother Shae got in a bad motorbike accident and has a long road ahead to what we hope is a full recovery. Shae is a great guy who loves helping people. He works with the Kittitas County Recovery Community Organization as a youth and family support specialist. He and his wife Ari welcomed their first son, Felix, last December. Here’s what Ari has to say:
Hey everyone.
Thank you for all the good vibes, well wishes and prayers!
For those who don’t know Shae was in a dirt biking accident at Horn Rapids outside of Richland on November 9th. He was flown from Kadlec to Harborview and underwent surgery to stabilize his spine and decompress his spinal cord. While surgery was successful, he does have deficits that will take time to recover from. Use of his left leg is limited, though recovery is hopeful.
At this time it has been decided that the best course of action for Shae to regain his full abilities is to not return home from the hospital and go to acute inpatient rehab. We are hoping to have him admitted to Harborview’s rehab unit some time next week. The length of time of this stay is unknown but we are mentally preparing ourselves for a 2 month stay.
I’m usually very resistant to openly asking for help but with Felix at home still needing a parent present, I’ve come to the hard realization that this is not something I can do alone. If you’d be interested in helping there are several ways I would appreciate help. We are truly grateful for any kind of support you’re able to provide.
1. When he is at the rehab center, I can’t be there all the time. I have to return to work to maintain my insurance. If you have a free day to visit for a few hours it would mean so much if you took the time to visit Shae. Even just sitting quietly with him is a huge help.
2. Phone calls! If you can’t make it to visit in person a phone call to Shae would a big help to keep him going. This is going to be a difficult and emotional journey and having people to talk to would be a huge help. The nature of my job doesn’t allow me to be readily available to talk to him.
3. I’m trying to raise some money to pay Shaes monthly expenses (mortgage, insurance, previous medical bills, ect). With a full recovery being a likely possibility I want to ensure that that the things we have worked hard for are still there when he comes home.
4. I am also trying to raise money for adaptive equipment and home modifications he will need when he comes home that insurance does not cover. Though Shae is going to rehab, he will not be fully healed when he comes home and our 100 year old house was not built with accessibility in mind. We are expecting to need grab bars, a ramp, stair railings installed, repairing our walkway so he can safely walk up the house using a cane/crutches/wheelchair/whatever, ect.
5. Encouragement, grace, prayers, well wishes and good vibes. Keep them coming. In this situation I don’t think we can get enough.
