Support Sergio as He Fights Colorectal Cancer

[English] In June of last year, Sergio’s life changed almost overnight.

After months of worsening symptoms, he was taken to the hospital, where imaging revealed a tumor the size of a grapefruit. Within days, he underwent emergency surgery. By the end of June, he had a colostomy—later determined to be permanent—and began an intense course of chemotherapy and radiation.

The toll has been immense.

Sergio has endured significant weight loss, physical weakness, and the emotional strain that comes with a diagnosis like this. Everyday life became something to navigate carefully, even painfully. There were times when sitting in a car for more than 15 minutes was unbearable. The simplest routines were no longer simple.

And yet, through all of this, he has fought with everything he has.

Against initial expectations, his body responded well to treatment. The tumor shrank significantly. In late February, he underwent a major surgery involving the removal of several organs, and a permanent urostomy. We are still waiting on pathology results to understand what comes next, but his resilience so far has been nothing short of remarkable.

Sergio is not only a fighter—he’s a father.

He has two sons, Josiah (13) and Benji (10), who adore him. He’s the kind of dad who takes his kids camping, encourages them to read, talks with them deeply, and shows up for them in every way he can. Even now, in the middle of everything, they remain at the center of his world. He is fighting for them.

Before his diagnosis, Sergio built a thriving construction business from the ground up. He’s always been someone who shows up, works hard, and takes care of his people. Even during treatment, he’s done everything he can to stay connected—checking in with employees, making sure they’re paid, trying to keep things afloat.

But cancer has changed what’s possible.

He has not had the physical ability to visit job sites, supervise work, or take on new projects. His business has slowed significantly. At the same time, he has taken on new financial responsibilities—moving into a family member’s home for care while still contributing to household expenses, supporting his two sons, paying his own bills and property taxes, and covering an overwhelming amount of medical supplies and recovery needs. Additionally, he'd poured years of his own labor and funds towards the completion of his home for his family. But he's had to put that dream on pause to focus on treatment and recovery.

To keep everything going, Sergio has relied on credit in ways he never had to before. He stretched every dollar to continue paying his team and caring for his family. Now, he’s reached a point where he simply can’t carry it alone.

Sergio ha enfrentado una pérdida significativa de peso, debilidad física y el desgaste emocional que acompaña un diagnóstico como este. La vida cotidiana se volvió algo que debía navegar con cuidado, y muchas veces con dolor. Hubo momentos en los que incluso sentarse en un carro por más de 15 minutos era insoportable. Y aun así, ha luchado con todo lo que tiene.

Contrario a lo que inicialmente pensaban los médicos, su cuerpo respondió bien al tratamiento. El tumor se redujo considerablemente. A finales de febrero, se sometió a una cirugía mayor en la que le removieron varios órganos y una urostomía permanente. Aún estamos en espera de los resultados de patología para entender cuáles serán los siguientes pasos, pero su resiliencia hasta ahora ha sido verdaderamente admirable.

Sergio no solo es un luchador, también es padre.

Tiene dos hijos, Josiah (13) y Benjamin (10), quienes lo adoran. Es el tipo de papá que lleva a sus hijos a acampar, los motiva a leer, conversa con ellos profundamente y está presente en cada aspecto de sus vidas. Incluso ahora, en medio de todo esto, ellos siguen siendo el centro de su mundo. Él está luchando por ellos.

Antes de su diagnóstico, Sergio construyó desde cero una empresa de construcción sólida y próspera. Siempre ha sido una persona que cumple, que trabaja duro y que cuida a su gente. Incluso durante el tratamiento, ha hecho todo lo posible por mantenerse al tanto—comunicándose con sus empleados, asegurándose de que se les pague, tratando de mantener todo a flote. Adicionalmente, Sergio ha contribuido años de su vida a su sueño de construir un casa para el y sus hijos. Pero ese sueño estado en pausa para concentrarse en el tratamiento y la recuperación.

Pero el cáncer ha cambiado lo que es posible.

No ha tenido la capacidad física para visitar obras, supervisar trabajos o tomar nuevos proyectos. Su negocio ha disminuido considerablemente. Al mismo tiempo, ha asumido nuevas responsabilidades económicas—mudarse a la casa de un familiar para recibir cuidados mientras contribuye con los gastos del hogar, apoyar a sus dos hijos, pagar sus propias cuentas e impuestos de propiedad, y cubrir una gran cantidad de gastos médicos y suministros necesarios para su recuperación.

Para poder sostener todo esto, Sergio ha recurrido al crédito de una manera que nunca antes había necesitado. Ha estirado cada recurso para seguir cumpliendo con su equipo y su familia. Hoy ha llegado a un punto en el que ya no puede hacerlo solo.
