Support Sekani's Recovery Journey

Meet Sekani - the happiest dog. His name is a literal translation to happiness and laughter, which he has never failed to bring to those around him. He is my best friend, a fantastic working dog, and sport enthusiast.

Sekani is my medical alert dog who has been through so much. He’s had many health fights of his own, and every single time he’s made it clear his mission is to make it back to me. We love adventuring and he makes that possible for me — going to the beach, the lake, on hikes. We love training, he is especially loving learning PSA. He enjoys obedience and task training. He will do ANYTHING to hear the sound of my laugh, even at his sickest. He has gotten me through the worst years of my life, and I got him through his. For the last year and a half he has been so healthy, spunky and full of life, he gained the nickname “the boy who lived”. He’s been referred to as a miracle, and he truly is. He’s shown me what path in my career field I want, and he’s a huge reason I keep pushing for my goals. He is my independence, yes, and my best friend, yes, but he is the part of my heart that beats outside my body. The very first time I held him, it felt like there was an invisible force field around us, like as long as we have each other we will be okay.

Sekani is currently fighting broncho pneumonia, made more difficult by previous (2023) aspiration pneumonia infections. On 6/30 he was taken into the ER for regurgitating, pale gums, refusing to lay down, distended abdomen, food refusal and lethargy, and 104.2F fever — symptoms that appeared out of nowhere and escalated that quickly in an hour. We did a full diagnostic work up - physical exam, chest & abdominal x-rays, ultrasound, and bloodwork. What we found was broncho pneumonia with lots of air in his stomach, likely from him gulping air while struggling to breathe.

I was able to cover his exam fee and diagnostics, but he needed to be hospitalized and as I was leaving, took a turn for the worse and was rushed back to be sedated and put on O2. I lost my ability to work due to health issues in May, and maxed out my care credit and depleted my savings last night for his diagnostics. One of my friends and Sekani’s aunties who has become very invested in him graciously offered to foot the bill for hospitalization at no ask, but this has depleted her savings and he still needs at home meds, treatment and follow up care with his internal medicine specialist. His prognosis is good, it’s just these 24-48 hours where he needs aggressive treatment that I am asking for the most help.
