This is to try to help the Sovis family with the ongoing medical bills that they will have with Sean's recovery.
A little over a week ago, Sean started experiencing severe knee pain. After several doctor visits and tests, it was found that he had a Baker’s Cyst behind his knee. The cyst was drained on Saturday, and he was sent home with painkillers and instructions to ice, elevate, and rest.
On Sunday, Sean slept in unusually late. When he finally woke up, he was disoriented and not himself. His color was off, he seemed confused, and he wasn’t responding appropriately. I knew something was wrong and called 9-1-1. He was taken to Ridges, where numerous lab tests were done. The results were alarming: Sean has cirrhosis, acute kidney failure, lactic acidosis, and sepsis. His vitals looked good at this point, but the medication he’d been taking for his knee was building up in his system due to poor liver and kidney function, making him very out of it. They started him on IVs and antibiotics and monitored him closely. His kidney failure caused fluids to move into his tissues, making him look very swollen. The doctors warned that it would be a long road ahead, but they remained hopeful. They said it was a perfect storm of conditions that led to this situation.
The first night in the hospital was rough, but I stayed with him all night. He finally peed, which was a positive sign since he hadn’t been able to before. However, he was confused and disoriented and pulled out his IV. They restarted it and gave him something to help him sleep, assigning someone to stay in the room because he was so restless and confused. Around noon on Monday, they moved him to the ICU for closer monitoring. His heart rate was elevated, but his vitals were otherwise stable. We also learned that he’s diabetic and he started on insulin. He peed again (yay!), but he remained very disoriented, agitated, and confused. I had to leave Monday night due to ICU visitor hours, but before I left, they scheduled surgery for the cyst behind his knee to clear out the infection. They also planned dialysis for Tuesday to remove the excess fluids since his kidneys weren’t working properly.
Tuesday began with the disappointing news that Sean wasn’t stable enough for the surgery to remove the infection from his knee. They started him on CRRT, a continuous form of dialysis that is gentler on the body than traditional dialysis. He is being closely monitored, and we are hoping and praying for a turnaround soon. We appreciate all the good vibes, prayers, and healing energy you can send our way. Our family is scared, confused, and overwhelmed by how quickly this has all happened.
