For most of us this past July 16th was just an ordinary summer day. For the Butler family it was a day that changed their lives forever. My friends Scot and Carla’s only 13-year-old son Scotty became deathly ill and was taken to the ER. In the Pediatric ER the Butlers learned their son was suffering from the near fatal effects of Diabetic Keto Acidosis from untreated Type 1 Diabetes. Thankfully Scotty is going to be okay! The news was exhilarating and devasting all at once. They stayed in the hospital for days, to recover and learning the do’s and don'ts of being a newly diagnosed insulin dependent diabetic family. Diabetes while treatable isn’t an easy disease for a family. It comes with medical burdens for the patient and financial burdens for the parents. For the Butler’s, especially for Scotty, the most difficult part of their story begins now. Constantly injecting expensive insulin, coping with the disease, doctor visits, insurance deductibles, co-pays, new medical devices and uncovered medical expenses. The bills add up quickly. Scot is a career pharmacy technician and Carla has stayed at home since Scotty’s autism diagnosis years ago to care for him. I’m kindly asking for any financial support you could give to help make their transition into their new lifestyle a little easier. Let’s do this for their family and especially for Scotty.
