Last July, I had nerve hand surgery and have been on workers compensation ever since. While the checks were much less than my normal paycheck, I budgeted carefully and made sure every dollar went toward what was needed for the house and my girls. In late February, I was finally cleared to return to work on light duty, and I had a job lined up. Things were starting to feel normal again.
But over the past few months, I began feeling unexplainably tired, out of breath, dizzy, and experienced a host of other issues. I ended up in the hospital several times because my blood pressure was dangerously high. After a stress test, CT scan, and angiogram, I was told that two of my arteries to the heart were 100% blocked, the third was 95%, and the fourth was 65%. Now, I need emergency open heart bypass surgery on May 6th. Because I was cleared to go back to work by my hand surgeon, my workers compensation checks were cut off completely. I was told recovery will take at least three months if all goes well.
Rent, electric, gas, and medical bills are still due, and I worry about myself and my girls. The stress of this situation has taken a mental toll on everyone involved. I never liked asking for help, but this is different. I need help—it's not an option anymore.
