Support Scott Spivak's Road to Recovery

In early November, 28 year old Scott Spivak developed a severe pain in his glute muscle and thinking he had torn it, visited the doctor twice. After days of severe pain, the onset of high fever and an apparent infection in his hand, he went to the E.R. He was diagnosed with life threatening sepsis and immediately transferred to a larger hospital.

We eventually learned that the sepsis was caused by a severe staph infection that had spread throughout his body, creating abscesses in his muscles and joints affecting many of his major organs. Despite very strong IV antibiotics, he required emergency spinal surgery to treat an abscess in his spinal cord which was creating neurological deficits. He spent 4 days in the ICU and underwent multiple other surgical procedures trying to treat the abscesses throughout his muscles.

He has been in the hospital for 2 weeks now and doctors are predicting at least another week in the hospital with an additional stay in a rehabilitation facility to regain his strength after spinal surgery and being bed bound for over two weeks.

This hard-working, fun-loving, healthy, athletic guy who worked out at least 4 days a week remains bed-ridden in constant pain. In two weeks, he has had 4 surgical procedures, blood transfusions, and a slew of investigative tests while his doctors figure out the most successful treatment plan. His infection and multiple complications are not following any expected route and the doctors are quite perplexed by the cause of this illness and lack of infection control. It will likely be a couple months before he is back to his old self. In the meantime, Scott cannot work and has no means to pay his mortgage and other bills. Illinois does not have state short-term disability so his medical leave from work is unpaid. He also faces mounting medical expenses, when he begins rehabilitation to work on regaining his muscle strength and overall health.

We are heartbroken that Scott is going through such a traumatic illness. In the spirit of giving, we appeal to family and all of our friends to make a donation of any amount. Your donation will go directly to Scott. Reaching our fundraising goal will enable Scott to focus on his recovery, without worrying about his finances and medical expenses.

Thank you for your kindness and generosity. Your support means the world to Scott and his loved ones during this incredibly difficult time.
