Support Scott Serata's Recovery from Assault

On Sept 14th, 2024 my brother, Scott Serata, was assaulted on the street in the San Francisco Marina district. He was out playing pool with 2 friends on Union St. They left the bar around 2 am and were walking on Fillmore St. when a group of 5 or 6 people attacked them. He was sucker-punched by someone, fell, hit the ground and was knocked out. Bystanders said several assailants were hitting and kicking his head, while he was down.

Paramedics and police were called. SFPD informed him it is a case of felony aggravated assault and they are trying to identify the assailants. He was taken to the ER. After some CT scans they confirmed his lower left jaw was broken and the bones were displaced. Thankfully he didn’t have spinal cord injuries, a skull fracture, or worse except now he’s looking at a long, expensive recuperation.

The ER bill alone was $23,400, and the cost for his surgery to reset and immobilize the jaw bone is roughly $15k. Medicare says he will be responsible for 20% of all medical bills which totals around $8,000. The facial surgery was done Oct 16, and they were able to put the bones back into place and insert a small metal plate with screws. He is now healing from the surgery. There is some nerve damage to part of his face, which we hope is temporary.

My brother is currently unemployed and this setback has affected his ability to seek employment. Your help will make it possible for Scott to pay his medical bills and not go into debt.
