On Friday, May 9th, Scott Berry was at home, completing his work week, and looking forward to the Spice Runners Lounge Live Stream when he started feeling incredibly ill. His wife, Janine, called an ambulance, and he was transported to Palomar Medical Center. En route to the hospital, Scott coded in the ambulance. Paramedics performed life-saving measures and were able to revive him after two minutes of CPR.
While in the hospital, Scott underwent emergency surgery. During surgery, Scott developed Flash Pulmonary Edema and coded once again. This time, the hospital staff including the Rapid Response Team revived him.
Scott was intubated due to Flash Pulmonary Edema and remained in the ICU for two days. Later, Scott and Janine would learn that Scott had suffered a Widow Maker heart attack and Flash Pulmonary Edema. Scott is alive today thanks to the life-saving measures taken by the Palomar Medical Center staff and paramedics. This type of heart attack has a 12% survival rate. We are incredibly grateful Scott is still with us.
Scott remained in the hospital's cardiac care unit for eight days before being discharged home. His progress has been remarkable; however, he faces a long recovery to strengthen his heart. He will receive in-home nursing, physical, and occupational therapy visits. Once he is strong enough, he will begin cardiac rehabilitation.
Janine exhausted her paid time off at the end of her first week at a relatively new job. It's uncertain when she will be able to return to work. This GoFundMe has been established so that she can continue Scott's care for as long as needed.
In addition, Scott's sick and vacation time ran out during the first week of July.
