A note from a mother facing the impossible...
"My 13-year-old daughter Scarlett is my hero, and she’s a survivor.
She is an ordinary individual who finds the strength to persevere and endure in spite of overwhelming obstacles...HERO. She's also a girl who copes well with difficulties in her life...SURVIVOR.
She was diagnosed with Myeloid Sarcoma which is a rare and dangerous form of Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML) in April of 2018. She battled and won. With recommendations from her Doctors, we decided for her to have a bone marrow transplant with cells donated from her little brother Max. We thought this would be her cure, but it wasn’t enough. Her cancer is back and it’s chosen the wrong girl and the wrong family. Scarlett has made the best of her year at home, making all A’s in the hospital/homebound school program, and starting her own successful cake business. We are praying that she can get back into remission, and back home with her friends and family quickly.
After lots of research by her amazing oncologist, we have decided to start her in a clinical trial at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital. This treatment combines the new standard AML relapse therapy with a new drug that primes leukemia cells to respond to chemo. The drug has already been approved for adult patients with AML. We’re hoping that this trial will put her in a deep remission. It will be a long road, as each treatment and recovery will be about 35 days, she will possibly need 2 rounds. After that we will decide on another bone marrow transplant, donor lymphocyte injections, or maintenance chemotherapy.
Our family will be traveling back and forth to Cincinnati and could use some help with cost of flights, lodging and meals.
Words cannot adequately express how thankful we are for our family and friends. We feel the love and prayers. Please continue to pray for Scarlett and our journey.
- Michelle, Bo, Suzanna, Scarlett & Max"
