Sawyer, my first cousin's 19-year-old son, was hospitalized on November 26 after a sudden and severe neurological illness changed everything for his family. What started as a few days of fever quickly escalated—Sawyer suddenly lost the ability to walk or talk, and his family rushed him to the ER. He was admitted to L&M Hospital and then transferred to Yale, where he stayed on the Brito floor from November 28 through December 2. Every possible test was run, and after days of uncertainty, Sawyer was discharged with a preliminary diagnosis of viral meningitis. The following day, his pediatrician called with the news that Sawyer had tested positive for Powassan virus, a rare and serious illness.

Since coming home, Sawyer has been working hard with occupational, physical, and speech therapy. He is making small, steady improvements, but still has more weakness on his right side than his left. The journey has been filled with ups and downs, including confusing hospital visits and moments of uncertainty about his care. Through it all, Sawyer has shown incredible strength and determination, fighting his way back day by day.

The financial burden of this illness has been overwhelming. The family is facing medical bills for specialists that are not covered by insurance, and Sawyer's mother, Jennifer and father Allan, a Groton City Firefighter has had to take time off work to be by his side. We are reaching out for help to ensure Sawyer can continue receiving the best care possible and to support his family during this challenging time.
