Dear friends, colleagues, former students, and anyone who knew Sasha,

We are reaching out with heartbreaking news about Alexander (“Sasha”) Chabaray, who taught Russian at the Defense Language Institute in Monterey for more than eight years. Sasha touched countless students and colleagues through his dedication, professionalism, generosity, and kindness. Last year, he was accepted into a competitive English-language program at Georgetown University, where he continued pursuing his professional goals.

On Monday evening, May 18, Sasha suffered a catastrophic medical emergency while at the gym. His heart stopped, and he was rushed to the emergency room, where he was admitted to the intensive care unit. Doctors discovered that Sasha had suffered a severe stroke along with a massive brain bleed. He underwent emergency surgery to relieve pressure on his brain and remained in a coma. Over the following days, additional testing and MRI scans revealed severe and widespread brain damage, including damage near the brain stem. Doctors also identified abnormal blood vessels in the brain and discussed a procedure to remove them, though his condition continued to decline. Testing showed that Sasha was unable to breathe independently and required a ventilator at all times. The medical team continued to evaluate his condition and prepare for difficult decisions.

His classmates from Georgetown visited him in the hospital daily, communicated closely with his family in Ukraine, and helped provide updates as new information became available. On June 14th, Sasha passed away, leaving his family, friends, students, and everyone who knew him heartbroken.

Sasha’s family in Ukraine wishes to repatriate his cremated body to his home country. This process involves significant expenses, including cremation costs, legal fees, transportation costs, and other challenges that his family must overcome from afar.

We are creating this GoFundMe to help support Sasha’s family with cremation and repatriation costs, legal fees, and other expenses as they work to bring him home and honor his memory. Any contribution, no matter the size, will make a difference for Sasha’s family as they navigate this heartbreaking situation.

Thank you for your support, prayers, and compassion during this incredibly difficult time.
