Dear Family, Friends, and the Greater Community,
We are Samara & Suzie and we appreciate you reading our story. We are raising funds to help our younger sister, Sarena. A little over a year ago, Sarena developed anaphylactic symptoms which led to multiple emergency visits and hospitalizations. She has developed an intolerance to nearly all foods which has resulted in a weight loss of nearly 80 pounds and malnutrition. In addition, any medical tests requiring dyes or contrasts are not possible due to intolerance. Her symptoms have worsened over the past year and at this time, doctors are unable to provide a specific diagnosis although it's believed that she may have a rare disease called "Mast Cell Syndrome." Due to numerous unconfirmed lab results and limited resources in Arizona, Sarena is seeking to visit a specialist in New York to undergo further tests and to hopefully confirm a diagnosis with a subsequent treatment plan.
We have watched Sarena struggle and deteriorate over the past year. Her extreme sensitivities only allow her to eat about 10 foods. As a former athlete (marathon runner, triathlete, and other sports) she is now limited in her activities and her quality of life has suffered due to the unknowns of her medical condition. In addition, Sarena has been unable to work due to risk of exposure to infectious diseases.
We are a hard-working family who does not ask for community assistance lightly. This is the chance to help a dedicated nurse who has helped so many in her nearly 25 years of working in medicine including sports medicine, as an EMT for 8 years and as an ICU trauma nurse for over 13 years. We are looking for answers and need financial help for Sarena so that she can continue to thrive as a mom, a nurse, a sister, a daughter, and friend. We appreciate any assistance you can give. Funds will be used toward travel and medical charges for the specialist in New York, for current medical bills, and to allow her to continue to see her local providers for treatment.
