Thadeu & Sarah were expecting twins in June, to add to their family of four. As the due date came closer, Sarah had planned to fly with her 4yo and 2yo back to NZ to be with her mum for extra support when she had the babies.
However a few days before the flight, when Sarah went for an ultrasound and CTG at St George's Hospital at 32 weeks, some abnormalities were detected as well as drops in the heart rate of the smaller twin.
Thomas and Jacob were born very soon after by emergency C-section that night (Wed 10th April) weighing in at 1.6kg and 1.3kg respectively. They were flown by helicopter a few hours later to John Hunter Children’s Hospital in Newcastle as they needed neonatal intensive care and there were no beds for them in Sydney.
Sarah initially stayed at the Newcastle hospital with the twins while Thadeu continued to work in Sydney. After a week they were discharged to St George in Kogarah as they were progressing enough (off breathing support and IVs and both taking full milk feeds through feeding tubes). However Thomas was later transferred back to NICU (intensive care) to Royal Hospital for Women in Randwick due to an intestine infection and possible need for surgery. For a period the boys were in separate hospitals, but fortunately room became available for Jacob to join his brother in the Randwick NICU.
Sarah has had to travel not only to and from hospital, but also between hospitals at times while still recovering herself. They have no family in Australia, their eldest two children are being cared for by Sarah's family in NZ.
We are raising funds for:
· To repair/replace their car
· Transport costs to cover the travel between Sydney and Newcastle, plus between hospitals in Sydney, while Sarah is still recovering. Uber is $50/day, and that's if the boys are in the same hospital.
· Meals for both Thadeu and Sarah while they are spending a significant amount of time away from home.
· Costs for changing flights for children to/from NZ and further trips to reunite with their older children.
· Baby essentials for going home in Sydney - most things are in New Zealand where Sarah had planned to give birth
· Car seats for twins
· Breast pump hire
· Nz Citizenship and Passport applications
