Support Sandy’s Fight for Mobility

I am urgently asking for help for my sister, Sandy, who is now temporarily disabled and unable to walk. Her condition has declined so rapidly that she needs immediate intensive inpatient physical therapy to have any chance of regaining her mobility — but insurance has denied the care she desperately needs.

A Sudden, Devastating Turn
My sister has lived with Neuromyelitis Optica (NMO) for twenty years. It’s a rare autoimmune disease that can cause paralysis. After two episodes years ago, she fought her way back and lived a full, active life — running her own psychotherapy practice, working out, and staying independent.
But everything changed this past year.
A flare-up made walking difficult. She went from a cane to a walker, to intensive outpatient therapy — doing everything she could to stay mobile. Despite her effort, she continued to decline.
Her neurologist ordered new MRIs, which revealed new lesions on her spine. She was admitted to Cleveland Clinic Hospital for seven plasma pheresis treatments.
When we arrived twelve days ago, Sandy could still walk with her walker.
Today, she cannot stand or walk at all.
This decline has been terrifying — and it has happened in less than two weeks.

She Needs Intensive Therapy NOW
Cleveland Clinic has recommended transferring Sandy to Memorial South for acute intensive inpatient physical therapy — 3 hours a day for at least 15 days.
This level of therapy is critical. Without it, Sandy risks permanent loss of mobility.
But her insurance provider has denied preauthorization, and they have also denied the next level of care. We are appealing but appeals take time — time Sandy does not have.

Financial Emergency
My sister has been unable to work consistently for the past three months. As a private psychotherapist, no work means no income. She is proud, private, and never wanted to ask for help — but the reality is overwhelming:
• Inpatient intensive therapy costs $3,000 per day
• This does not include additional therapy, medical care, or basic living expenses
• She cannot safely return home without treatment
• She cannot work until she regains mobility
We are fighting the insurance decision, but we need a safety net right now so Sandy can begin therapy immediately.
