Support Sandy and Lily After the Loss of Their Mother

Sandy and Lily have lost their mother Thao Thanh Duong — their protector, guide, and entire world. Now, they need our support as they face life without her, navigate legal hurdles, and work to honor her final wishes.

Ten years ago, during Lily’s birth, their mother, Thao, was diagnosed with Takayasu Arteritis — a rare and life-threatening disease that causes inflammation of the arteries. Despite the risks, she declined surgery so she could remain present to raise her daughters. She was determined to give them love, stability, and strength — even while battling a debilitating illness.

Thao escaped an abusive past and, with unimaginable courage, built a life for Sandy and Lily from scratch — far from her home and family in Vietnam. She poured every ounce of her being into protecting them and making sure they never went without love or care.

Earlier this year, Thao suffered a brain bleed that led to permanent brain damage. Doctors discovered the Takayasu’s had spread to her brain. Her body could no longer fight, and on May 20th, she passed away.

Now, Sandy is faced with the overwhelming responsibility of becoming Lily’s legal guardian, managing hospital bills, and fulfilling her mother’s final wish — to have her ashes returned to Vietnam to rest with her family.
