For 25 years, I dedicated my life to caring for others as a caregiver. Last August, I suffered a serious back injury that required surgery, and since then, my life has changed dramatically. Chronic pain and sciatica have made it difficult to stand for long periods, which has affected my ability to work. I started a small business selling Caribbean cuisine at pop-up events, but even with a back brace, compression socks, and pain medication, every day is a struggle. My doctor has been giving me epidural steroid injections every few months, but my condition has worsened, and surgery is now my only option.

I rely on my children and my mom for support, but the upcoming surgery will require an extended recovery period. My doctor expects that I’ll need to stay at a rehabilitation center, since my apartment has 21 stairs and isn’t accessible for someone recovering from major back surgery. The costs for medical bills, rehabilitation, and daily living expenses during my recovery are more than I can manage alone, especially since I won’t be able to work for at least three months.
