Support Sammy and Her Son During Hospice Care
My name is Samantha (Sammy) Hatfield. I’m 42 years old, a single mum, and I’ve been diagnosed with Multiple System Atrophy – Parkinsonian type (MSA-P). This rare, aggressive disease is on the government’s “guaranteed disability” list, yet because of my age, I was denied benefits. Despite the diagnosis, I’ve been told I should still be able to work — but the heartbreaking truth is, I can’t.
MSA has taken almost everything from me. I can no longer walk, stand, or even use my hands for long. Activities I loved — swimming, baking and decorating cakes, going to the beach, or simply sitting around a campfire with friends — are now impossible. Even talking for more than an hour leaves me completely drained. Most of my days are now spent in bed or on the couch, managing pain and the rapid decline in my health as I enter hospice care.
Because of my rapidly declining health I've asked my friend Trista to start this GoFundMe and help manage it.
My 21-year-old son, Mikey, has stepped into the role of my full-time caregiver. He wakes up before dawn to work a part-time shift at FedEx, then comes home to care for me the rest of the day and night. He is doing everything he can, but working fewer hours means we’re barely surviving financially. The weight of caregiving at such a young age is already immense, and on top of that, he is carrying the burden of trying to keep us afloat.
We are humbly asking for your help. Every donation will go directly toward:
• Covering basic living expenses (the mortgage, food, utilities)
• Medical and caregiving costs not covered by insurance
• Cremation expenses, so this future cost does not fall entirely on my son
• Giving Mikey the chance to reduce his work hours, so he can focus on spending time with me in what are likely my final months
Your support, whether through a donation or by sharing this fundraiser, will make a profound difference. It will ease the financial stress on my son, allow us a measure of peace in this difficult situation, and help us spend our remaining time together without constant fear of bills we can’t pay.
From the bottom of our hearts, thank you for caring about us, for reading our story, and for offering kindness in any way you can.
With love,
Sammy & Mikey
