My name is Samantha Sandoval, and I am writing with a heart full of hope and deep sincerity to ask for your support as I begin a journey that I’ve dreamed of my entire life—attending Sam Houston State University. I have been accepted to this university, and with that acceptance came a flood of emotions: excitement, gratitude, and, if I’m honest, fear—fear that I won’t be able to afford the opportunity I’ve worked so hard for.
I come from a family of eight. I am one of six children, raised by a strong and determined mother who had me at a young age, and a stepfather who works tirelessly to help support our household. Together, they’ve done everything in their power to provide for our needs, but the reality of raising a large family means there is little left over for something as expensive as a university education. We live paycheck to paycheck, and while my parents support my dreams in every way they can, the financial burden is just too heavy for them to carry alone.
Since I was very young, I have felt called to the medical field. I was born a twin, and while my sibling did not survive, I did—despite being given only a 5% chance of life. I have always believed that my survival came with a purpose. I am fascinated by medicine and science, and I know without a doubt that I am meant to serve others through healing. My goal is to become a cardiothoracic surgeon one day, though I understand that as I grow and learn, my specific specialty may evolve. What will never change is my passion for the medical field and my desire to make a real difference in people’s lives.
Being accepted to Sam Houston State University is not just a personal achievement—it’s a milestone for my entire family. I would be the first person in my family to attend a university, and that means everything to us. I know that starting at a community college is a more affordable path, but this acceptance is an open door to a future I never believed would be possible. SHSU offers the programs, mentorship, and support that I believe will guide me toward my goals, and I can already see myself thriving in their community.
I’ve done everything in my power to make this dream a reality. I applied for FAFSA and was awarded the Pell Grant, but I did not qualify for the Bearkat Promise due to being labeled “income ineligible”—a classification that doesn’t reflect the reality of our financial situation. I hadn’t even told my parents I applied to SHSU because I didn’t want to add to the stress they’re already facing. One of my younger sisters is currently struggling with mental health issues, and our family has been navigating that hardship as best we can. I thought I wouldn't be accepted, and when I was, it felt like a miracle. I just never expected the next step—affording it—to feel so out of reach.
I have never shied away from hard work. I believe in showing up, giving my best, and pushing forward no matter the obstacle. My mother raised me to be strong, responsible, and resilient—and now I want to take those lessons and build a life that honors her sacrifices. I want to be someone who can help others, who can give back to the community, and who can serve as proof that where you start does not define where you can go.
I humbly ask that you consider sponsoring my education in whatever way is within your means. Your support would not only help cover the cost of tuition, books, and housing—it would be an investment in a young woman determined to make a difference. It would be a lifeline for someone who is trying to break cycles and become something greater than her circumstances.
Thank you for taking the time to read my letter. Whether you’re able to help or not, please know that I appreciate your time, your heart, and any encouragement you can offer.
With deepest gratitude and hope,
