My name is Laurie Pope, and I'm here today with a heavy heart, reaching out on behalf of my brother, Todd, and his beautiful family. Todd was a dedicated correctional officer for the State of California, working long and hard hours to provide for his loved ones. His wife, Samantha, also works full-time as an employment counselor for Human Services in Calaveras County, tirelessly serving her community.

Todd was a loving husband and a devoted father to Dylan, 15, Warren, 5, and Alden, 2. His children are the light of their lives—happy, loving, and full of joy.

The Unseen Battle: Mental Health in Corrections

What many don't realize is the immense toll that working in corrections takes on an individual's mental health. Correctional officers face unimaginable daily stress, leading to extreme mental distress. Studies have tragically shown that these officers are seven times more likely to die by suicide than the average population.

Todd was aware of his struggles and was active in counseling, working with his therapist to navigate the difficult terrain of his profession. But some days, the mental fatigue and the intense psychological pain, or "psychache," became too overwhelming. Despite his best efforts, Todd lost his battle with mental health and left this life, leaving a profound void in our hearts and in his family.

Todd's passing has not only left emotional devastation but also a significant financial burden on Samantha and their children. The sudden loss of his income, coupled with accumulating funeral costs, has put them in a precarious position. Our immediate goal is to help them alleviate these financial pressures so they can focus on healing and stability during this incredibly difficult time. We want to ensure that Samantha and the children can stay in their home, a place of comfort and familiarity as they grieve and adjust to life without Todd.
