I have the world’s most fantastic children. My daughter was born in 1982 and nearly 3 years later, a son to carry on the family name. Years later, he made me a grandfather with the loving help of his wonderful wife. But life has its twists and turns.

A little over 2 years ago, my daughter was diagnosed with stage 4 brain cancer. She has built for herself an amazing career over the years. Last spring, she was honored by the Massachusetts Department of Corrections as the 2024 Deputy Superintendent of the Year. Sally is incredibly strong and has fought through this and has already beaten the odds, but cancer is a hideous monster. Her cancer has returned, and she has just gone through her 2nd brain surgery. She is hoping for success with an experimental procedure in NYC beginning soon. Sally accepts the hand that she’s been dealt with strength that amazes me and of which I am in awe.

Her biggest fear is losing her independence. She doesn’t want to lose her house over this. As her retired father, I wish that I could just pay off her mortgage. But, alas, that isn’t the way my life has gone. I am seeking help so that her struggle never becomes also financial. Her health takes more fight than any of us should have to endure, just to stay alive.
