Salimah Hassan joined Aintree University Hospital in 2017 as an advanced nurse practitioner in cardiology. She has over 2 decades of service in NHS and she supervised and trained other specialist nurses in arrhythmia as well as HF. She expanded her knowledge in cardiac arrhythmia and in 2020 she became the first nurse to implant cardiac pacemakers in Liverpool. She played a pivotal role in setting up the Liverpool single syncope (black out) service and nurse led arrhythmia service in Aintree University Hospital. She started her PhD with Liverpool John Moore's university in 2021. She aspired to become the first nurse consultant in cardiology but unfortunately this shining, rising star was struck by cancer in October 2021. She is so passionate about her job that despite undergoing chemotherapy she insisted on continuing to work. Due to lack of advanced treatments in UK,
Salimah self-funded experimental immunotherapy and gene therapy in America in the hope of cure. Unfortunately the cancer has now prevailed beyond any hope and Salimah is too weak to work.
She is receiving palliative treatment for the present. Salimah devoted her life to NHS and she deserves to be recognised for the great achievements.
Her pioneering work has opened the door for nurses to take advanced training in cardiac device implantation.
She is the most inspirational nurse I have ever worked with.
