My name is Shaista, and I am a close friend of Salema Kamal. I am setting up this fundraiser with a heavy heart but also with hope, to support Salema and her family during an incredibly difficult and life-changing time.

Only this week, Salema’s husband was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer. The diagnosis has come as a devastating shock to the family. He is currently very unwell and remains in hospital in Leeds, undergoing numerous tests as doctors work to determine the best course of treatment. He is unable to work, and with only minimal sick pay, the family’s income has been massively affected.

At the same time, Salema has five children, with her youngest baby being just three weeks old. She herself has recently given birth and is currently on basic maternity pay, adding further financial strain at a time when her family needs stability more than ever.

Many people in the Batley community will recognise Salema through her long-standing role as an art teacher at Madni Girls Academy, where she has dedicated many years to teaching and nurturing students. She has always been someone who gives to others, and now she finds herself needing support during the hardest period of her life.

In addition to the emotional toll, the practical and financial pressures are overwhelming. Salema is travelling frequently from Batley to Leeds hospital, incurring significant costs for petrol and parking, while also trying to care for her children at home and be present for her husband in hospital.

I am raising funds to help ease some of this burden. Donations will go towards:

• Travel costs to and from hospital

• Household and day-to-day living expenses

• Childcare support

• Loss of income due to illness and maternity leave

• Ongoing and long-term support as the family navigates treatment
