Sait Tuzel, a media literacy researcher in Turkey, was jailed for 8 months after being unfairly accused of terrorism by the Turkish government. Along with more than 30,000 academics, journalists and judges, Sait has been fired from his job as a tenured Associate Professor of Education in language arts education with a speciality in media literacy. His wife has also been fired from her university post. Neither of them can work at a university or leave the country as their passports have been revoked. This young family of four (with two young children) will be re-building their life after this terrible tragedy.
Sait is a member of my academic research team at the Media Education Lab and spent two years in Kingston, Rhode Island when he was a Visiting Scholar here at the University of Rhode Island. Renee Hobbs will receive the funds and will send them to Sait directly via Western Union so that he can re-build his life in Turkey. Your funds will support Sait and his young family at this difficult time.
