Honoring John Karras

John Karras, owner of Retro Stereo, passed away unexpectedly and of natural causes. John left behind many adoring friends, colleagues, former students, and many, many, many vinyl albums! All sales profits from the Retro Stereo’s location at Urban Americana (1345 Coronado Ave, Long Beach, CA) will benefit his 16-year old daughter, Sage. John was his daughter’s biggest cheerleader and always encouraged both her artistic talent and her dreams. If you’d like to donate directly to Sage’s college savings fund, you can do that through this fundraiser. John would want all of his beloved records to find good homes, ones where they are appreciated for their high-quality sound and aesthetic appeal. Be a part of preserving our diverse musical history. About John and Retro Stereo

John was born and raised in Ohio with his parents, Toby and Ed, and sister, Joanne. It was there he became an ardent fan of college football and his beloved Buckeyes. His earned a Ph.D. in higher

education and launched a career in higher education. He worked a several colleges and universities in Ohio and California. Through his natural leadership and encouragement, he became a respected colleague and influential mentor to many students. He founded Retro Stereo in 2005, combining his entrepreneurial spirit with his love of music. He jumped in the retail sale of vinyl albums and vintage equipment with enthusiasm. Known for his expansive record

collection and exquisite taste in music, John was also a passionate concert-goer. His musical tastes were diverse, loving classic rock, jazz, blues and everything in between.

Celebration of Life

John was many things; loving father, encouraging mentor, avid record collector, fanatical football fan, faithful friend, and much, much more. He was wonderfully complex, just like his taste in music.

An all-welcome Celebration of Life will be hosted at Urban Americana on February 22, 2025 from 7 to 9pm.
