Help Ryo Get the Medical Care He Desperately Needs

Ryo’s Story
Ryo was a healthy, happy boy before he suffered brain injuries at school—injuries we were never informed about. Since then, his health has changed dramatically. Because the school did not provide any information and his symptoms do not always appear during appointments, doctors have had a very hard time diagnosing him.
Our pediatrician, who had been advocating for Ryo, tragically passed away. With nowhere else to turn, we had to travel out of the country to see a team of neurologists and neurosurgeons. This trip, including all testing in summer 2025, cost our family approximately $25,000.
That evaluation finally led to believe some Drs here and got a referral to a neurologist at BC Children’s Hospital, but Ryo is still waiting for the care he urgently needs.
What Life Looks Like Now
Some of Ryo’s symptoms improve at times, but others continue to progress.
He does not have a wheelchair, so I often have to carry him or rely on taxis when his feet twist and he cannot walk. Because his symptoms come and go, it has been extremely difficult to show doctors what he’s experiencing.
Access to pediatric specialists—especially on Vancouver Island—is very limited, and getting support through Island Health has been incredibly challenging.
Why We Need Your Help
Ryo needs specialized therapies that are not covered or only partially covered by our insurance. Your support will help provide:
-Occupational therapy sessions in Vancouver.
-One week of functional neurology extensive treatment – $2,580
-Hotel for treatment week – $250 × 5 nights
-Physiotherapy (ongoing)
-Neuro-optometry therapy appropriately $13000
These treatments are essential to help Ryo regain function, relieve pain, and prevent further deterioration. We are doing everything we can, but we can’t do it alone.
