Ryland is an energetic happy 6 year old who is currently hospitalized in very serious condition at UVA. He is raised by his grandparents; grandma is staying at UVA with him while grandpa is trying to continue to work and raise their grandson who also has some special circumstances (age 7). Initially Grandma Tammy had to stay in a hotel to quarantine and later she’s been allowed to stay at the Ronald McDonald House for $25 per night and she has to eat and maintain being away from home as well gas for Grandpa to come visit when he can. If you can donate any amount to help this wonderful family it would be greatly appreciated.

Here’s his story directly from his Grandma, I kindly ask you to share, donate, any amount counts), and keep him and his family in your prayers.

Ryland’s diagnosis is acute respiratory failure right now. He has chronic lung disease and was trached at 5 months old. He was ventilater and gtube dependent. Ryland was admitted into the PICU at Roanoke Memorial for respiratory distress on March 8th. Ryland was transferred by helicopter from Roanoke Memorial to UVA PICU where he was quickly put on life saving machines. He was placed on ecmo to do the work of the lungs on March 9th and placed on a ventilator to breath for him. Ryland continued to decline and need more and more medication to keep him comfortable and sedated. He was also on a paralytic to keep him still and safe. As of now Ryland is on the ventilator intubated by tubes down his mouth and being fed with a tube down his nose. For over 2 weeks Ryland depended completely on machines to survive. On March 21st trials to get Ryland off the ecmo began; they “capped” the oxygen and no oxygen was being added to his blood. On March 23rd he proved himself ready to remove the cannula from his neck and the ecmo cannula was removed from his neck which was a huge step in the right direction! Although it was big positive step they still have a long way to go. Ryland is completely dependent on the ventilator. Today is March 24th and he is still not taking his own breaths yet but his vitals are stable and they are encouraged by his progress even the baby steps in the right direction!
