My name is Russel Kallas, but you’re more likely to know my brother, Ryan Kallas. He’s lived in Los Barriles on an off since the early 2000’s and full time for over 2 years now. He’s been windsurfing and kiting in LB since the 80’s and was the guitar player and singer for the Needlefish for many years. Most of you probably know him from those activities. I’m trying to raise funds to help cover a horrible accident that he was involved in that occurred on Saturday morning (12/20/25). He recently purchased an e-foil and was on his 3rd day of practice. He was already up on the foil, and falling is normal at this stage of the learning curve. Unfortunately, somehow his hand hit the foil or went into the propeller during a fall and it severed the last joint of his left index finger. Yes, the one that’s critical in playing guitar! He was able to get himself to shore where good samaritans helped him with his board and got him to the clinic. There it was determined that surgery was necessary and that was performed that evening in Cabo. The surgery went well, except for the bill more than $13,000! This includes ongoing physical therapy. Ryan is a tough guy and can handle his recovery but to lose the ability to play guitar would be devastating, therefore physical therapy, hope and determination. What he doesn’t have is insurance. He’s can live well on his SSA check, but such a huge debt is also devastating. He was reluctant to have this posted as he’s not the type of person to ask for favors or help, but this is another level of need. Please help support Ryan and help him along his long road to recovery. He won’t get his finger back, but with your help and his hard work I’ll bet he’ll play for you again!
