Earlier this week, Rufus suddenly became very sick. He stopped eating and grew weak, and our vet discovered he was suffering from a severe case of colic. Despite fluids and treatment at home, his condition didn’t improve, and he was rushed to the hospital for emergency care. Today, Oct. 17, 2025, Rufus is in surgery to remove the sand blockage and relieve the pain it has caused. The procedure is expected to cost between $8,000 and $10,000.
If you’ve ever visited Saving Grace Animal Sanctuary, you’ve probably met Rufus, one of our most friendly and beloved residents. He spends his days playing with his donkey brother, Bruce, and greeting visitors who can’t resist giving him a few scratches behind the ears.
We’re doing everything we can to give him the best chance at recovery because he’s family and we won’t give up on him.
Your donation, no matter the amount, will go directly toward Rufus’s surgery, medical bills, and recovery. Every dollar helps us cover his care, keep him comfortable, and bring him home to Bruce where he belongs.
If you can, please donate and share Rufus’s story. Thank you for being part of the Saving Grace family. Together, we can help Rufus heal.
