On Christmas Eve 2024, after a difficult, high-risk pregnancy, our nephew, Ruben Fernandez, and his loving, beautiful partner of 6 years, Estefany Bonilla, celebrated the birth of their baby girl, Genevi. You can imagine the joy and gratitude for this wonderful event.

7 weeks later, tragedy struck. Estefany ended up at the hospital. CPR and EMS and a week in ICU were all unable to save her. All those plans and hopes and dreams on Christmas Eve 2024 have been changed forever. Genevi will never remember or know her mom. And Ruben is now a single dad.

We are all shocked and heartbroken. She was only 36. Grief, disbelief, anxiety, overwhelm, and tremendous sadness are just the beginning. Childcare, formula, diapers, housing, single parenthood…no partner to share your life with and no Mommy to raise their baby girl. That’s the hard truth going forward.
