Hey everyone,
Let’s start with the facts: I am currently unemployed, looking for my next big career step, and trying to figure out what the next chapter of my life journey looks like.
But before I jump back into the structured, 9 to 5 world, I want to do something I’ve dreamed about since I was a kid. As a queer person of color, I’ve spent 30 years living in this country (I know, shocking, considering how young and handsome I look) but I haven’t actually seen most of it. I want to take this unexpected window of time to change that with a massive, cross-country road trip.
The ultimate goal? Driving all the way to Oregon to see my best friend of 15 years.
(Okay, full disclosure: I’m mostly doing it to meet their dog. But seeing my best friend is a close second.)
Now, I know what some of you might be thinking. “Royce, driving across the country with no stable source of income sounds a little reckless, if not completely wild.” Honestly? You’re not entirely wrong. It’s a risk, but it’s a risk I am fully willing to take to fulfill a childhood dream before life settles back down.
I also want to address the elephant in the room. There are massive injustices happening in the world right now, and I know a road trip can feel incredibly shallow by comparison. If you have the funds to give, but you want your money to go toward combating major global and social issues—like supporting human rights in Palestine or helping those who have been unjustly incarcerated by ICE—please, give to those causes first. They deserve the spotlight and the resources.
But if you happen to have a few extra dollars because its pay day, and you’re the kind of person who simply loves watching people chase down a wild, childlike dream just for the joy of it... that’s who this fundraiser is for.
Every single dollar will go directly toward the logistical reality of getting from Point East coast to west coast, from electricity to charge, roadside emergencies, cheap motels, camp site, and god forbid any road side emergency on the highway.
To make sure you can see exactly where your support is going, I am launching a YouTube channel to document the entire trip. odiously its called One day at a time! You'll get to see the amazing views, the chaotic roadside stops, and the inevitable moment I finally meet my legendary god dog. and who knows this could be my new career in the end because not only am I going to be driving but I plan and camping also. look at me, becoming an old doors type of person.
Thank you so much for reading and for laughing along with me, and for supporting this wild detour. Whether you can donate or just support by subscribing and just want to follow along for the ride, I appreciate you and your love!
With love and adventure,
Royce_likethecar
