Roy Shaffar, my stepdad, has always been the most loving person, stepping into our lives when we needed him most. He gave my mother and us a new sense of hope and belonging when he married her, and his kindness and faith has touched everyone in our family. Now, Roy is facing a heartbreaking diagnosis: adenoid cystic carcinoma, stage 4 metastatic cancer, which he has been fighting for three years and is currently in treatment for. Our family is determined to make his life as smooth and comfortable as possible, but we need help to do so as his needs change.
We want to make our home ADA accessible for Roy, so he can be comfortable and safe doing his daily activities. The funds will help us expand our driveway for safe transport to his appointments, convert a half bath to an ADA accessible restroom for his wheelchair needs, pay for a portable hoyer, and provide portable equipment for transport—unfortunately, insurance does not cover certain items. My mom is his sole caregiver, and as she will not be able to work, the funds will also help with monthly expenses. This will also help pay for funeral arrangements.
If you know our family, you know we rarely ask for help and tend to keep things private, often laughing through the pain. But in this situation, we must be honest and open. We ask our family, friends, and community to please help us reach our goal to support Roy and our family during this hard and uncertain journey. Anything will help. Thank you.
