My Mom, Roxanne Rodgers, has spent 18 years shaping the minds of children. As a teacher she was dedicated, knowledgeable, and inspiring to all her students. She motivated students and always fostered a positive learning environment. She has been a mentor, guide, and confidant, offering support both in and out of the classroom over the years. As a friend, she is the one who gives without hesitation, even when it costs her personally. Now my mom needs help. After a long and challenging journey, overcoming many health issues, my mom’s lungs were failing quickly, and she desperately needed a lung transplant to survive. On Wednesday, November 26, 2025, at Loyola University Medical Center she received a right lung transplant. This life saving procedure costs over a million dollars. My mom is currently on Teacher Retirement Disability, and she was lucky to be receiving Medicaid. My mom found out that she was right above the threshold and would no longer qualify for Medicaid as of Jan. 31, 2026. Now quite a bit of her disability is paying for premiums, co-pays, deductibles, pulmonary rehabilitation and post-transplant medications. Following the surgery, my mom is unable to work for at least twelve months. My mom was hoping to get back into the classroom after all of this. Unfortunately, she has learned that she will always have to wear a mask when she is around a group of people. She is immunosuppressed, so she can’t go back into the classroom to be around children daily. Her future is uncertain, but we know God has a plan. My mom recently hit her three-month post-transplant on a Wednesday and had a bronchoscopy done which checks to see if there is any rejection from her new lung. We got the results on Friday stating that there were no signs of rejection and everything looked great. By Monday we were in the ER, and my mom was admitted to the hospital. My mom ended up having a pleural effusion, which is a buildup of fluid on her right lung, pneumonia in her right lung, and 2 pulmonary embolisms, blood clots, in her left lung. She spent 13 days in the hospital, 10 of those days were in the ICU. We are learning that the lungs are easily infected over other organs and this isn’t going to be the easiest recovery. We are trying to raise 85,000-$100,000 dollars to help cover her deductible, co-pays, medications, her pulmonary rehabilitation, and basic living expenses during this long and difficult recovery period which she has also had to have a 24-hour caregiver during the first year after transplant. This money will help our family solely focus on supporting our mom without the additional stress of financial strain. If you can give, thank you from the bottom of our hearts. If you are unable to donate, please consider sharing this page and keeping my mom, Roxanne, in your thoughts and prayers. She has spent her life caring for others. Now it is our turn to care for her. Thank you for standing with my mom during this critical time.
