My passion to eliminate food insecurity, and access to health services within the farmworker community in northern Sonoma County has led me to Yale. The cause is near and dear to my heart, as a first-generation Latina, I grew up in the farm working community of Sonoma County’s wine industry. My memories growing up in “wine country” were not of smiling folks in Dry Creek clinking glasses of Cabernet. Instead, I often bore witness to the more-hidden costs and community health consequences on the workers who make the award winning bottles: the long hours, calloused hands, uncontrolled diabetes, substance use disorders, unrelenting stress, the mental illness left untreated from erroneous stigma in Latino communities. While I did not initially comprehend them as “health disparities”, as the daughter of a farmworker, I grew up understanding first hand the challenges that farmworker families face surrounding food and medical equity and access, and from an early age I saw the impact that public health measures have on communities.

After earning my Bachelor's of Science in Human Development, from the University of California, Davis, I have spent seven years in direct-service and leadership roles dedicated to improving health outcomes of underserved populations in Sonoma County.  I am a tireless advocate that has more than earned my acceptance to Yale's School of Public Health in Social and Behavioral Health Master's program. As a first-generation Latina attending an Ivy League university, you can imagine the tuition cost is on par with a deposit for a home in Sonoma County. I am asking the community to contribute to my tuition and living expenses.

With the unyielding support of my community, I was accepted to Yale, NYU, and  University of Michigan all with scholarship opportunities. Always doing my homework, I spoke to several BIPOC alumni and instructors of each program and landed on accepting Yales's offer. I have been offered $30,000 in funding towards annual tuition of ~$49,500. However, I still need to cover the remaining ~$19,500 per year.

Upon completion, I will use my Public Health degree and implement evidence-based research practices, work collectively with communities, build leaders and establish equitable partnerships. I will specifically continue to work towards improving health outcomes of those who are denied access to stable high-paying jobs and healthcare. I also plan to continue doing direct-service and being part of leadership roles in the nonprofit world of Sonoma county.

Thank you for being part of my journey and for making an impact not only on my life, but my community.
