It is with a heavy heart that we share the news that our beloved research technician Sarontaa Bain (Rontaa to most of you), has been bitten by a shark.
During a spear fishing session Rontaa and another diver noticed a large Caribbean reef shark swimming closely by them. The other diver made the decision to spear the shark even though no immediate threat to life was present. The shot attempt was not only illegal but also incredibly unnecessary and dangerous. The diver missed the shot and the shark swam (we believe defensively) at speed towards Rontaa who was not involved in the decision or act. The shark unfortunately bit both of Rontaa’s hands causing significant damage. Rontaa was then driven at speed to the mainland where he was then flown to Nassau for urgent treatment. Both hands were severed with deep cuts and tendon damage which required immediate surgery.
As of today Rontaa has received two separate surgeries, antibiotics and pain killers. We hope Rontaa will make a full recovery but there is significant unknown at this stage. We do not know if he will loose any fingers or thumbs or if there will be any long term nerve or physiological damage. Over the next 2-3 months Rontaa will receive dressing changes, antibiotics, painkillers, regular physiotherapy and constant assistance given he is unable to use either of his hands.
We created this GoFundMe to assist Rontaa with the financial pressures of not only what is outlined above, but also the void of income given he is unable to work to earn money.
We kindly ask those of you that know him, and those that don’t, to consider donating to this GoFundMe to help one of our favorite friends in his time of need. Every dollar will help and support his journey, thank you.
