On January 18th at 1 am, Ron, a healthy 55 year old, went into sudden cardiac arrest. Even in a panic, his wife Sue and son Alex were able to perform CPR on Ron immediately which would eventually save his life. He was shocked 6 times by the EMTs in order to regain a pulse. Ron was transferred to Landmark then immediately to Rhode Island Hospital where he's been the last 2 weeks in a vegetative state. Every team of doctors has assessed him and every test has been performed to help us determine exactly what went wrong. Two weeks later and we are still unsure. What we do know is that, although he hadn't been really responding to commands, right now all of Ron's organs are operating normal and his heart is in great shape. It's been a roller coaster two weeks for Ron as well as his family, needless to say.
On Tuesday, January 28th, Sue, Alex, Michelle, and the rest of the family met with the doctors. They basically gave us two options at that point. 1) Keep Ron comfortable until he passes naturally or 2) Schedule him for a tracheotomy and PEG for Friday and he'd be monitored in the hospital until he would eventually go to a long term facility. Sue and Alex opted for the second option and our whole family wholeheartedly supported that decision. We believe Ron just needs more time.
On Thursday, January 30th, Ron's mental status improved tremendously. A true miracle indeed. We were able to take the breathing tube out and he has been on oxygen since. While he had a good day, he is certainly fighting to have more than just one. While we are uncertain what each day brings for Ron, we do know the road ahead is a long one. If you know Ron, you know his family is his everything. You know he is a lover, not a fighter. You know he is one of the strongest people you have ever met and has a whole life ahead of him.
With still so much uncertainty on the daily, Sue, Michelle, and Alex have been with Ron around the clock, which means being out of work. On top of that, Ron's hospital stay and testing and retesting adds up real fast. With that, we ask you for support as Ron and his family figure out this new reality. This includes hospital bills, future doctor's visits, and immediate cost of living expenses for his home as the household's income just halved.
Thank you for coming to our page and reading Ron's story. Even if you aren’t in a position to donate, we’d be grateful if you can share the page.
Thank you all for the support, kind words, and positive thoughts!! Let's keep those prayers coming for Ron!!
