My name is Romaric Fonyuy Kijika. I am a nurse from Cameroon and have committed my life to improving healthcare in rural communities. Growing up in the Northwest region of Cameroon, I have witnessed firsthand the challenges of limited medical access – experiences that ignited my passion for nursing and midwifery. I pursued a nursing education in Cameroon and have spent the last few years working in remote clinics, often serving villages with few other healthcare providers. In these communities, basic healthcare resources are scarce, and preventable illnesses too often turn tragic.

This fall, I have a life-changing opportunity: I have been accepted into the MSc Advanced Professional Practice (Nursing and Midwifery) program at the University of Plymouth in England, starting on September 1. This prestigious graduate program is designed for experienced healthcare professionals and will build on my knowledge to develop advanced skills and leadership in nursing. By completing this MSc, I will gain expertise to improve practices and patient care, which I intend to bring back to support vulnerable populations in Cameroon.

About the Fundraiser - Patrick McCarville

Patrick served as a Peace Corps volunteer in Northwest Cameroon. During his service, he met Romaric, who lived next door. The day Patrick arrived, Romaric was there to help him carry his belongings into his house. Patrick quickly became very close to Romaric and his family. Romaric’s mother, Helencia, frequently sent plates of food over, helping Patrick immerse himself deeply into the community. With their support, Patrick became involved in many community projects, some of which he continues to support more than 10 years later.

Tragically, Helencia suddenly became very ill and was later diagnosed with metastatic cancer. During a visit with Helencia in the hospital, Patrick promised her he would establish a scholarship to support Romaric’s education. Helencia was deeply moved by this promise but, sadly, passed away the following day.

Since then, Patrick has supported Romaric's educational journey, witnessing him excel through primary school, secondary school, and university. Now, Patrick seeks your help to fulfill his promise by funding Romaric’s final educational goal. Your contribution will honor Helencia’s memory and support Romaric in achieving his dreams.
