️ Help Support Roger’s Family After His Sudden Passing — Gone Too Soon
Hi, my name is Jason Ortiz and I’m starting this fundraiser for someone who became like family to me. I’ve never created a GoFundMe before, but this loss is too personal and too heartbreaking not to try.
On July 14, 2025, my dear friend Roger Martinez passed away following a sudden and severe stroke. He was in his early 40s. Roger leaves behind his loving wife and three beautiful children, who are now navigating unimaginable grief, without the financial safety nets many of us are fortunate to have.
I’m humbly asking for your support to help Roger’s family cover their basic living expenses and purchase a reliable vehicle, something they urgently need just to continue working and going to school.
Who Was Roger?
We met Roger in December 2020 while my family was visiting Cancun during the COVID lockdown. He worked near our condo selling tours, and after a few friendly conversations, we invited him to share dinner with us. That night began a friendship I never could’ve predicted.
Roger quickly became more than just someone we saw on vacation. He helped us navigate Cancun like locals, never overcharging, always giving us honest advice, and showing us kindness without expecting anything in return. During our last day there in 2020 he introduced us to his wife and children. Since then, we’ve stayed in touch and planned our visits around spending time with his family each time we have been to Cancun. We would always keep in touch. He even helped countless friends we’ve referred over the years.
He wasn’t just generous, he was selfless, hardworking, and full of pride for his family. Despite earning modest wages (less than $1,200/month combined household income), he owned his home outright and did everything he could to build a better life for his kids. He cheered them on at soccer matches, celebrated their school achievements, and worked tirelessly to provide a future with more opportunities
What Happened?
On July 5, 2025, Roger suffered a massive stroke. He was quickly incapacitated and placed on life support. Doctors soon informed his family that he would require a tracheostomy and ventilator.
Despite all efforts, Roger passed away on July 14, 2025.
There are no government safety nets in Mexico to catch families in moments like these. Roger was the emotional and financial anchor of his home, and his loss leaves his family in a devastating situation, grieving, with no way to stay afloat.
How the Funds Will Help
This fundraiser will go directly to Roger’s wife and children and will be used for:
• Purchasing a reliable vehicle (their current car frequently breaks down, making it nearly impossible to get to work/school)
• Covering immediate living expenses (utilities, groceries, transportation)
• Helping the children stay in school and continue their education
If we’re able to exceed our goal, the funds will continue to be used to stabilize the family financially as they adjust to life without their beloved father and husband.
Please Help—Any Way You Can
If you can donate, even just a little, it would mean the world to this family. And if you can’t donate, please share this fundraiser with others who might be able to help. Roger gave so much to others during his life, it’s our turn to give back.
From the bottom of my heart, thank you for reading and for caring. If you have questions or ideas on how else to help, feel free to message me directly.
With gratitude,
Jason Ortiz (Roger’s friend in Alaska)
