For anyone that knows me, you know that I'm generally a very private person. You know I love to help people as much as i can. This time, it's me needing help. At the urging of some friends and family
I've sucked up my pride and turned to GoFundMe for my recent Spinal Fusion surgery, and subsequent hospital stays thereafter.
Initially the insurance company refused to pay the $475,000 hospital bill, somewhat understandably. But by agreeing to pay out of pocket for things they wouldn't cover finally got me approved.
August 29th the real journey began. An 11 hour surgery, a 16" incision, an S1 to T10 fusion (much more than expected), and 65 staples to finish it off. Successful surgery by all means, and walking 2 days later. Surprisingly an early release, after just 6 days. All was good.
Unfortunately the 3 days after surgery included trouble walking, multiple plummeting Blood Pressure events, and fainting spells that led to an emergent admission to the hospital. 2 days of of blood work, scans, and a good team of doctors and I was diagnosed with several blood clots in my lungs and a likely clotting disorder. Surprising to hear at the least, and a bit scary to hear that I'd be having another surgery
Along with all of the dangers and possible outcomes. Thankfully the surgery was successful and they removed several clots. 5 more days in the hospital, but it was a blessing to even be going home.
I was fortunate to be alive, but here's where the next challenge for me comes in. The reason friends and family have urged me to use GoFundMe. The unimaginable cost of everything. I've had to accept that a person can't always do it on their own, and it's ok to ask for help. Continued prayers is definitely a type of help, as I believe in the power of prayer. Help in the way of positive encouragement, texts, calls, and cards I've received. Of course help monetarily.
I would appreciate any of the ways of helping me. If you feel compelled to help monetarily, I want you to know how it would help.
Recovery from this type of surgery is 6 months to a year
Of course the medical bills, largely paying what insurance won't cover and all of the co pays. The second hospital stay that I haven't even learned of those additional costs. 6 weeks of home health care. 6 months of physical therapy. Expenses for the 2 hour drive to and from Vanderbilt. Covering general monthly expenses from not being able to work (medical insurance premiums, car insurance premiums, medications, etc.)
I know that this has been lengthy, but I wanted people to know my story and why I even considered GoFundMe. I appreciate you for reading this. I appreciate the prayers, kind words, and good wishes. Most of all I appreciate the love and support I've received through this medical journey I'm on.
So, thank you. I wish you the blessings of peace, love, and happiness.
