Dear Friends and Family,
I’m reaching out with an important update about Robert, and it’s not the news we hoped for. On Sunday, October 15th, he was rushed to the hospital due to breathing difficulties. Thankfully, he was taken to the facility where he’s been receiving cancer treatment and surgery.
Robert has been diagnosed with post-obstructive pneumonia and a necrotic lung. Just last week, he completed 10 radiation treatments for his brain on October 7th and was preparing for his final chemotherapy session on October 14th. Unfortunately, we’ve learned that the cancer has become resistant to all treatments and is continuing to grow.
To assist with his breathing, doctors performed a bronchoscopy, placed stents in his lungs, and he has made remarkable progress in reducing his oxygen intake from 5L to just 2L.
A Quick Journey Recap
It’s been a long and challenging journey for Robert:
October/November 2023: Robert began experiencing pain in his lower back, initially misdiagnosed as sciatic nerve pain.
January 2, 2024: After further testing, he was diagnosed with soft tissue cancer.
January 8, 2024: A biopsy confirmed he had Ewing Sarcoma.
February 2, 2024: He started chemotherapy.
March 23, 2024: Scans showed mixed results; while the chemo reduced tumors in his lungs and head, the cancer in his leg had grown.
April 15, 2024: He underwent above-the-knee amputation surgery.
August 2024: Referred to a sarcoma specialist for a clinical trial due to treatment resistance.
September 19, 2024: Admitted to ICU for complications, including a brain bleed from new cancer lesions.
October 14, 2024: He finished radiation treatments and chose hospice care.
After thoughtful consideration, Robert has made the difficult decision to enter hospice care, where he can be more comfortable and at peace. He will be coming home with hospice services on Friday, October 18th, after his last IV antibiotic treatment for pneumonia.
