I’m writing on behalf of the Bittle family, who are facing an incredibly challenging time.
Beloved community member Robert Bittle is living with Parkinson’s disease with dementia (Lewy Body Dementia), a progressive and heartbreaking illness. Sadly, Robert’s dementia has advanced to the point where he can no longer live at home, and his family is now navigating the emotional and financial realities of full-time memory care and transition to hospice.
Those of us who had the joy of learning in Robert’s old wooden-beam classroom, or who were blessed by his steady kindness as a friend, know what a warm light he brings. A guiding presence for generations of Carolina Friends students, Robert was among the school’s first graduates in ’71 and went on to teach there for 37 years in the Chapel Hill Early School, Lower School, and Middle School. He created beloved classes like Mythic Worlds, taught American history in ways that truly mattered, and had a rare gift for reaching students who struggled. A gifted guitarist and musician, Robert taught students how to use their own voices to make change. As Robert now needs care himself, this is a chance to give back to a life devoted to teaching, creativity, and kindness.
Robert’s wife Andrea and his children, Austen, Chris, Meg, and Reid, are doing everything they can to ensure he receives the health care and comfort he deserves. Unfortunately, this disease has brought an overwhelming financial burden, including the high cost of memory care and medications that are not fully covered by insurance.
With memory care costing around $11,000 per month, this fund will help cover several months of essential care and medical expenses. Robert has a rare, genetic form of Parkinson’s with very limited treatment options, and the only medication he is a candidate for is not fully covered by insurance. These are extraordinary costs, especially for a family navigating the emotional impact this disease takes on Robert and those who love him.
All funds raised through this campaign will go directly toward:
- Memory care and medical expenses
- Prescription medications not covered by insurance
- Ongoing care needs as Robert’s condition progresses
