We are heartbroken to share that Robert Bess, a dedicated landscaper known for his hard work and the deep care he gave to every client, passed away suddenly just a few weeks ago. For years, Robert built a loyal client base through his integrity, craftsmanship, and kindness.
This fundraiser is being organized by the Huss family, who had the privilege of working with Robert for over a decade. In that time, he became more than a trusted professional—he became a close family friend. Robert helped us through multiple moves and was a steady, caring presence during the prolonged illness of our beloved Phil, who passed away. His quiet generosity and unfailing reliability made a lasting impact on our lives, and on so many others he worked with and cared for.
"I met Robert Bess in 2015 soon after I moved into my home in the Westover Hills neighborhood. I had a beautiful yard on Caledonia Rd at the time and we had an agreement that he would help me keep it up. I would play in the flowers and dirt and he would keep things mowed and tidy. I’ve never met a kinder and more hard working man in my life. Honestly, Robert became part of our family with two of my children also depending on him to help keep their yards in good shape. He was so knowledgeable about landscaping and I often asked for his advice on my plantings and trees. When my husband became disabled and I had to move to Moseley to a handicap accessible house, he followed me there and helped again on a regular basis. He was also always concerned about how my husband was doing. He always checked in with me with Happy Mothers Day, Merry Christmas or Happy Easter messages. "- Mary Kay Huss
"
Robert always went the extra mile. He constantly had ideas for how to make our lawn more efficient and thriving. He became a part of our family quickly, always sending us the most heartfelt messages when my husband’s father fell sick. We have two little kids, and they’d always get so excited seeing him in the morning on project days - “Mom! Mom! It’s Mr. Robert!” our daughter loves to climb trees, but couldn’t reach the lowest branch of the one she wanted to climb the most. I mentioned this to Robert & we came home to a child-sized ladder just for her. He also had his passion projects, one being taking old playgrounds, fixing them back up and donating them to Indigenous Peoples tribes & schools in the area. An incredible man, and one we will continue to miss. " -Emily Huss
His unexpected passing has left a huge void in the lives of those who loved him—and has also placed a heavy financial burden on his family, who are now without their primary source of income. They are facing mounting bills, daily expenses, and deep uncertainty as they begin to navigate life without him.
We’re raising funds to help cover lost income, essential living expenses, and immediate financial needs during this incredibly difficult time. Any donation, no matter the size, will make a meaningful difference and help bring stability and support to Robert’s family as they grieve and begin to rebuild.
Thank you for your kindness, generosity, and for honoring Robert’s memory.
