I’m writing this as a sister who loves her family deeply and as an aunt who has been blessed to share a bond with my niece that feels like having my own child. She calls me her “second mommy,” and anyone who knows me knows how close we are. Nothing in my life matters more than her well-being.

Recently, my sweet niece endured a major surgery — a grueling 7-hour operation followed by post-operative complications and an unexpected and heartbreaking 5-week hospital stay. Those weeks were filled with uncertainty, endless procedures, medical interventions, and machines keeping her stable. While we are grateful she is finally home, her recovery is far from over. She lives with complex medical needs that bring daily challenges and an uncertain future. Each step forward requires constant medical attention, therapies, and ongoing care.

My sister has been nothing short of extraordinary throughout all of this. She is not only Isabel’s mom, but also her fiercest advocate and caretaker. As a nurse, she worked hand-in-hand with the hospital’s medical team to ensure Isabel received the best care possible. And when they say a parent’s love makes a difference in a child’s healing, I have seen firsthand how her presence and expertise have saved Isabel time and time again. Still, the emotional and financial toll is immense. She is trying to balance being a provider for her family while also being fully present for her daughter’s complex needs, and that load is simply too heavy to carry alone.
