We’re raising funds for our friend Rico to help them get out of debt and get ahead on rent after losing their primary job this past winter. They are starting a new job this week, however to not risk losing their housing, they need to cover three months of back-rent and get ahead for next month.
Rico is an immigrant trans person who has navigated housing insecurity throughout their time in New York. They have been working precariously in nightlife for many years. Their current home has been their most stable housing situation so far. They have a great relationship with their roommates and friends, who have been incredibly supportive during this time. However, being indebted is not a sustainable situation.
Rico lost their primary source of income in December, when all under-the-table workers at their place of employment were let go as a result of immigration politics and a general climate of fear. Their other nightlife position has just ended for the season. While they are starting a new job this week, they are also keeping their commitment to caretake for a trans community member during surgery recovery. They will be unable to work full-time for at least another week. The proceeds from this fundraiser will go directly to their household’s master tenant so that Rico will no longer be in arrears and can move forward with less precarity.
This fundraiser is a chance to support a cherished friend and offer relief in a hostile time for immigrants and workers. Through growing uncertainty and fear, Rico has consistently cared for their friends and communities in New York and their family abroad, often keeping their personal struggles quiet. It’s hard to ask for help, and we are hoping that this fundraiser can show our friend that care, reciprocity and solidarity exist in their time of need.
