Support Rick in his Cancer Fight

Donation protected
The name Rick Sparrow may not sound familiar to you, but if you have been to any event Musqueam has hosted, whether it’s a golf tournament, a ceremony, Aboriginal day, etc., you know him. You have likely eaten his one-of-a-kind
cooked salmon, but never knew who made it.

Rick has spent his life on the river. For decades he's nourished the Musqueam community, family, and friends with his delicious barbecued salmon. Nothing makes Rick happier than sharing a meal, his labour of love, with the people
around him. His recipe is one to be beat and is known even outside of the community. When Francesco Aquilini first tasted Rick’s fish, he was hooked and a friendship began. Francesco started making frequent orders to Rick, which of
course he happily obliged. The two have become life-long friends, bonding over a meal and sharing stories. When you stand at the BBQ with Rick, you will get to know him best.

If you know Rick, then you know he would give you his last nickel if you were in need. That’s just the type of man he is and has been since he was a young boy. When he was 15 years old, his father, Willard Sparrow, passed away leaving
his mother, Helen, alone to raise him and his 9 siblings. The moment Rick was told of his passing, he quit school and began working full-time as a fisherman to help support his family. He cared for his siblings and mother without a single complaint. He has since spent his life taking care of and helping others. And now, Rick needs our help.

In May of 2020, Rick was diagnosed with multiple myeloma, a cancer of the plasma cells that causes bone marrow damage, bone pain and fractures. Since then he has been undergoing treatment and is growing stronger by the day, but still has a long road ahead of him. Over the next 8 to 10 months, he will be unable to work as he undergoes an aggressive stem-cell transplant and chemotherapy. In addition to losing his income, physical challenges from the cancer have necessitated costly modifications to his house.

We would like to see him enjoy life a little by alleviating his financial worries. We are doing this fundraiser so that Rick will not have to worry about finances during his recovery. We, Rick’s family, along with Francesco Aquilini, humbly ask that you contribute whatever you can to this amazing man. We thank you in advance for your help. If you have any questions, please reach out to Johnna Sparrow or Tara Schmidt

Thank you on behalf of Rick Sparrow, the Sparrow family, and Francesco Aquilini.
