Help Us Bring Healing Through Dance to Richmond’s Youth

At Richmond Urban Dance, we believe movement has the power to heal. That’s why we’ve partnered with Richmond City Schools and community organizations to offer the Therapeutic Dance Program—a 10-week after school program designed to support children who have been exposed to chronic stress and trauma.

For many of these students, life has already dealt challenges that no child should have to carry. Trauma doesn’t just live in the mind—it lives in the body. Through dance, guided movement, and safe community support, this program gives students a way to process their experiences, regulate their emotions, and build resiliency for the future.

This isn’t just another dance class. It’s a research-based, trauma-informed program. Specialists emphasize the importance of rhythmic, repetitive movement in healing trauma. By combining psycho-education with expressive dance therapy, we are helping youth connect their lived experiences with healthier coping strategies—empowering them to rewrite their narratives through movement.

But here’s the reality: We cannot run this program without your help.

Smaller group sessions, trained counselors, and higher adult-to-student ratios are essential to ensuring the safety and success of every child in the program. These critical supports also increase staffing and program expenses.
