My name is Richard Petrillo. I'm an Army veteran and former newspaper editor. For the past 11 years, health issues have caused me to go from working full time to living in a shelter for homeless veterans. While waiting for an appeal hearing of my claim for Social Security Disability for 26 months, my health worsened due to stress. When my disability claim was approved in December 2017 my situation improved, but now I find myself in trouble again. For the past four months I've been applying for jobs, knowing that I probably would not be able to handle working again. I didn't have to worry about that because no one wants an employee pushing 70. I'm finding it impossible trying to live on Social Security alone. Since Covid hit, my financial situation has deteriorated to the point where I'm about to lose my car, which I need to get to the VA clinic in Rome, 27 miles from where I live. Becoming homeless again is a possibility I don't want to think about. I didn't want to resort to this type of fund raising, but I'm out of options. I would be extremely grateful for any donations to keep me afloat.
