Rhonda Mullings is a remarkable young woman who is about to graduate in the top tier of her Bachelor of Science Nursing class this November. Her journey has been shaped by her mother, Sophia, whose warmth and positivity inspired Rhonda to pursue a career in healthcare. Sophia spent nearly six years at Wexford, bringing light and kindness to everyone she met, and Rhonda has always aspired to reflect that same energy in her own work.
Rhonda’s path has not been easy. She attended both TCL and USC Beaufort, commuting nearly two hours round-trip several days a week, determined to overcome waitlists and obstacles. She chose ECPI in North Charleston for its hands-on, fast-paced nursing program, dedicating herself to long days of study and clinical work. Throughout her education, Rhonda worked full-time in hospitality at Wexford, learning to manage her time, build resilience, and interact with people from all walks of life. Her ability to maintain a high GPA and earn a spot on the Dean’s list while balancing work and school is a testament to her dedication.
As her mentor, I observed Rhonda in action when she came to Volunteers in Medicine last summer where I am the Assistant Director of Patient Care with 50 years of R.N. experience. Rhonda was careful and knowledgable in her interaction with staff and patients. She impressed me with her maturity, skills and energy. I have had the privilege of supporting and positively influencing this outstanding young woman as she embraces the challenges of her new healthcare career as a future R.N.. Now, as Rhonda prepares to transition from hospitality to nursing, she faces the challenge of significant student loan debt and the costs of living as she starts her career. Community support will help her pay off her loans and cover essential expenses, allowing her to focus on making a difference in healthcare. By coming together, we can help Rhonda begin her nursing journey with the same positivity and strength that her mom, Sophia, has always shown.
