Hello everyone,
My name is Kara Brady and I am fundraising on behalf of my brother, Jarrett Lloyd, and sister-in-law, Sydney Miceli, for their son Rhett. These funds will help to cover medical bills, potential travel costs, and day-to-day expenses as Sydney and Jarrett are by Rhett’s side 24/7.
Shortly after Rhett’s first birthday, he developed increasing abdominal distention, compounded by unexplained fevers and night sweats, among other symptoms. This led to the first of many ER trips to VCU. On CT, it was noted that he had severe hepatosplenomegaly (enlarged liver and spleen). His blood work also showed pancytopenia (low blood levels). He was treated with multiple rounds of platelet and blood transfusions. A bone marrow biopsy was done to help determine what was happening. He was eventually sent home while Jarrett and Sydney waited for results.
Shortly after this, Rhett’s abdominal distention worsened and he was showing signs of pain. After further imaging, it was determined that his spleen needed to be removed due to his blood being sequestered, or trapped, in his spleen. The surgery was successful but did not fix the initial issue of his low blood counts.
Once his spleen was sent to pathology, it was determined that Rhett has a blood disorder called histiocytosis with further specific diagnosis still pending. Histiocytes are a type of white blood cell, and Rhett has a rare genetic mutation that has caused uncontrolled histiocyte growth.
Treatment will continue to consist of blood and platelet transfusions, now with chemotherapy to destroy the overgrowth of the histiocytes. VCU does not specialize in this disease, so travel out-of-state may be necessary.
A financial burden is the last thing Jarrett and Sydney need to worry about when their child is sick. Any donation is appreciated.
Thank you all for the continued prayers, donations, and support. Updates will be provided as we hear new information.
