Life can change in an instant, and for the Kennedy family, that change came with a diagnosis of Gerstmann-Sträussler-Scheinker syndrome (GSS), an extremely rare and devastating degenerative neurological disease.

For nearly 25 years, Rhett worked hard to provide for his family, building a life filled with love, hope, and stability. In 2021, the early symptoms of GSS took away Rhett’s ability to work, and since then the disease has dramatically impacted nearly every aspect of daily life. As the disease has progressed, simple tasks that many of us take for granted have become overwhelming challenges.

As both the cognitive and physical effects of Rhett’s condition greatly increased throughout the last several months, it became necessary for Kara to take a leave from her workplace to become his full-time caregiver. Her days and nights are dedicated to providing constant care, managing medical needs, and ensuring her husband receives the support and dignity he deserves. While Kara gives everything she has to care for Rhett, the family faces the reality of living on a greatly reduced income while medical and household expenses have and will continue to grow.

The financial burden has become immense. Between lost wages, medical care, and everyday living expenses, the challenges continue to mount. What was once a two-partner effort to support their household has become a full-time caregiving mission focused on navigating an unimaginable disease.

Despite these hardships, the family remains determined to face each day with courage and love. They are grateful for every moment together and continue to find strength in the support of their friends, family, and community.
